Summer Skincare Made Simple: The Do’s and Don’ts

Woman with sunglasses enjoys the outdoor thanks to summer sun protection With summer on the horizon, now is the perfect time to reassess your skincare routine to keep your skin healthy, hydrated, and protected. Warmer weather and increased sun exposure can lead to clogged pores, dehydration, and premature aging, so adjusting your regimen can help maintain a clear and radiant complexion. Cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Renuka Diwan and the team at The Laser & Skin Surgery Center offer the following tips:

Switch to Lightweight Moisturizers

Heavier moisturizers that work well in winter can feel too thick in the summer, potentially leading to oiliness. Instead, opt for a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer that provides hydration without clogging pores. Look for formulas with ingredients like hyaluronic acids and glycerin, both of which are absorbed into the skin, and attract moisture without adding heaviness. If your skin tends to be oily, consider using ahydrating serum for a refreshing, breathable feel.

SPF for Skin and Lips: Why It’s Essential

Daily sunscreen use is non-negotiable for preventing sun damage, especially in the summer when UV exposure is at its peak. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 for your face and body, and reapply every two hours when spending time outdoors. Don’t forget your lips—sun damage can cause dryness, irritation, and even increase the risk of skin cancer. A lip balm with SPF 30 or higher will keep them soft and protected.

Retin-A in the Summer: Keep or Pause?

Retin-A (tretinoin) is a powerful ingredient for improving skin texture and acne, stimulating collagen regenration and reducing signs of aging, but it can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. You don’t need to stop using it in the summer, but you should practice sun protection including application of sunscreen during the day.

Protecting & Nourishing Your Skin

Hydration is key in warm weather, both inside and out. Drink plenty of water to support skin elasticity and moisture levels. After sun exposure, use soothing ingredients like aloe vera or niacinamide to calm redness or irritation. For added protection, incorporate antioxidants like Vitamin C into your routine to help prevent free radical damage caused by UV rays, and pollution from a ariety of sources.

Common Myths About Liposuction Debunked

Woman pinching her waist in underwear, showcasing liposuction results, body contouring, and confidence in aesthetic transformation Liposuction is one of the most effective ways to refine body contours and eliminate stubborn fat that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise. Despite its popularity, several misconceptions about the procedure can cause hesitation. Understanding the facts can help individuals feel confident in their decision to enhance their appearance.

At Laser & Skin Surgery Center, Dr. Renuka Diwan, a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained dermatologic surgeon, specializes in precise and personalized liposuction treatments. With years of experience in aesthetic surgery, Dr. Diwan ensures safe, natural-looking results tailored to each patient’s goals.

Myth: Liposuction Is for Weight Loss

Liposuction is designed to sculpt and contour the body by removing localized fat deposits. While it results in a slimmer, more defined appearance, it is not a weight loss procedure. The best candidates are individuals who maintain a healthy lifestyle but struggle with areas of stubborn fat.

Myth: Liposuction Results Are Temporary

Liposuction provides a noticeable transformation, but results continue improving as swelling subsides. The fat cells removed during treatment do not return, making the results long-lasting. However, maintaining a stable weight through proper nutrition and exercise helps preserve the new shape.

Myth: Liposuction Tightens Loose Skin

Liposuction effectively removes excess fat, but it does not tighten loose skin. Patients with good skin elasticity typically achieve the best results. For those with skin laxity, additional treatments such as laser skin tightening or surgery may be recommended for optimal contouring.

Myth: Liposuction Is Painful with a Long Recovery

Thanks to modern liposuction techniques, the procedure is more comfortable than many expect. At Laser & Skin Surgery Center, Dr. Diwan uses tumescent liposuction, which involves local anesthesia for a smooth and virtually painless experience. Most patients resume light activities within a few days and fully recover within weeks.

Myth: Liposuction Is for Everyone

Liposuction is best suited for individuals in good health who have realistic expectations. It is not a substitute for weight loss or a treatment for obesity. A personalized consultation with Dr. Diwan ensures each patient receives a customized approach tailored to their needs and goals.

How Soon Can I See CoolSculpting Results?

Woman in underwear hugs her smooth legs while sitting on the couch after CoolSculpting CoolSculpting is a popular, non-invasive body contouring treatment designed to target and reduce fat in stubborn areas. At the Laser & Skin Surgery Center, Dr. Renuka Diwan, a board-certified dermatologist with years of experience in cosmetic dermatology, leads our team in providing exceptional care and customized treatment plans. With her expertise, patients can trust they are in capable hands as they work toward achieving their aesthetic goals.

CoolSculpting works by freezing fat cells, a process called cryolipolysis, which gradually eliminates them from the body. But how soon can you expect to see results?

What to Expect After CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting doesn’t provide immediate results, as it relies on the body’s natural healing processes to remove the treated fat cells. After your treatment session, the frozen fat cells are gradually broken down and eliminated by your lymphatic system. This process takes time, so patience is key when evaluating your results.

Timeline for Results

Most patients start to notice subtle changes about three weeks after their CoolSculpting treatment. However, more significant results typically appear around the two-month mark. The body continues to flush out fat cells for up to six months, providing a gradual improvement in contour and shape. The exact timeline can vary depending on factors such as the treated area, your metabolism, and how closely you follow any post-treatment instructions provided by our team.

Enhancing Your Results

To maximize your CoolSculpting outcomes, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential. Staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, and incorporating regular exercise into your routine can support your body’s fat-elimination process and help you sustain your improved figure. Dr. Diwan and our team are available to provide personalized advice on how to enhance your results. We recommend at least two CoolSculpting treatments to achieve the desired results.

5 Ways Your Neck Changes As You Age

Middle aged woman with sleek neck contours following neck lift rejuvenation surgery in Cleveland, Ohio Aging affects every part of the body, including the neck. While the face often gets the most attention in anti-aging treatments, the neck can reveal the passage of time just as prominently. Fortunately, Dr. Renuka Diwan, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist, specializes in solutions for a more youthful neck. Here are five ways your neck changes as you age—and how a neck treatments can help rejuvenate teh appearance of your neck.

1. Skin Laxity Develops

Collagen and elastin production decrease with age, causing the skin to lose its firmness and elasticity. This often results in loose, sagging skin on the neck, which can progress to a “turkey wattle.”

2. Neckbands Become Visible

The platysma muscles, which run vertically down the neck, weaken and separate over time, creating prominent vertical bands. These bands can make the neck appear older and less defined.

3. Fat Accumulates or Shifts

Age-related fat changes can lead to a double chin or uneven contours around the jawline and neck. These changes even affect individuals at a healthy weight.

4. Sun Damage Impacts Skin Quality

Years of UV exposure can lead to wrinkles, discoloration, and rough texture on the delicate neck skin, further contributing to an aged appearance.

5. Jawline Definition Diminishes

As the skin and underlying tissues lose support, the sharp line between the chin and neck may blur, affecting the overall balance and harmony of facial features.

How Non-surgical Treatments Can Help

A simple treatment like Botox Cosmetic injections can relax platysmal (muscle) bands that stand out when you are animated such as when talking. Botox, injected with the Nefertiti lift technique, can also improve the appearance of sagging skin on the neck and jowls. Injection of HA filler Juvederm Volux, FDA approved for the jawline, can create noticeable reduction of the appearance of jowls. Another simple treatment is injection of Sculptra to improve collagen and skin thickness. We offer other techniques such as microneedling with or without radiofrequency, and painless no-recovery, tripolar radiofrequency treatments to gradually tighten the skin as well. Specialized medical grade skin care products developed for looseness of neck skin will also enhance rejuvenation. Laser treatments help to rejuvenate the neck by treating discoloration caused by sun damage. Tumescent liposuction, an office procedure, is very helpful in reducing fullness of the double chin, neck and jowls and redfining the contours of the neck and jawline. A combination of treatments, individually customized, can provide the best results in appropriate patients.

Common Myths About Lip Fillers Debunked

Lip Filler Myths Debunked, Laser and Skin Surgery Center, Westlake, OH Lip fillers are a cosmetic treatment to give you a youthful, fuller pout. However, despite their widespread use, myths and misconceptions abound. Learn the truth about lip fillers and set the record straight by debunking common myths.

The Laser and Skin Surgery Center, led by board-certified and fellowship-trained cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Renuka Diwan, offers expert lip filler treatments almost daily, ensuring natural and personalized results for each patient. With over 35 years of experience, Dr. Diwan combines her artistry and advanced techniques to enhance her patients’ natural beauty safely and effectively.

Myth 1: Lip Fillers Always Look Fake

One of the biggest fears is that lip fillers will make the lips look unnatural or “duck-like.” The truth? When performed by a highly trained professional, such as a board certified cosmetic dematologist, with a trained eye and extensive experience, lip fillers enhance but do not distract. The results are subtle and natural-looking and are in balance with the rest of your face. Dr Diwan’s filler techniques prioritize enhancing not only your lips’ natural shape and symmetry, but rejuvenating your whole look, leaving you with a refined and balanced appearance.

Myth 2: Lip Fillers Are Permanent

Lip fillers are not permanent, which is why they are so popular. Most fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance your body naturally metabolizes over time. Depending on the product and individual factors, fillers typically last between 6-12 months, allowing you to adjust your look if you wish. The filler can also be adjusted with hyaluronidase enzyme, if desired.

Myth 3: Getting Lip Fillers Is Painful

While some people worry about the pain associated with injections, we instuct patients on using numbing creams, and offer other techniques in our office to minimize discomfort. Patients often describe it as tolerable. The procedure is quick, and any tenderness afterward is mild and temporary.

Myth 4: Fillers Are Only for Younger People

Lip fillers aren’t just for people in their 20s or 30s. Many older individuals choose fillers to restore volume lost due to aging or to smooth lines on and around the lips. Lip fillers are a versatile treatment tailored to various cosmetic goals.

Myth 5: Once You Start, You Can’t Stop

Contrary to popular belief, your lips won’t look worse if you stop getting fillers. Once the product dissolves, your lips return to their natural state, with no long-term negative effects.

This innovative skin care treatment combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration, and antioxidant infusion into one luxurious experience. It is a top treatment among skin care enthusiasts and professionals.

What Is a HydraFacial?

A HydraFacial is a non-invasive facial treatment that can improve skin health and appearance. It uses a patented device that cleanses and exfoliates the skin while simultaneously delivering targeted serums tailored to your specific skin type and concerns.

The treatment is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, and addresses various issues such as dryness, fine lines, blocked pores, acne, and uneven skin tone.

The HydraFacial Process

The HydraFacial process unfolds in three key steps. It begins with surface cleansing and exfoliation, where the treatment deeply cleanses the skin to remove impurities and dead skin cells. It prepares the skin for subsequent treatments and enhances effectiveness.

Next is the extraction and hydration phase, during which a light suction method is used to extract dirt, oil, and blackheads to deep clean the pores. It cleanses the skin thoroughly but gently, which is what distinguishes HydraFacial from traditional facials.

The final step involves the infusion of customized serums such as hydrating serums, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, and peptides into the skin to address your specific skin concerns.

Benefits of HydraFacial

One of the most appealing aspects of a HydraFacial is the immediate glow it delivers. Most clients notice a visible difference in their skin right after the treatment, experiencing enhanced radiance and improved texture.

Mini Facelift: Recovery Tips for a Youthful Holiday Look

Woman in winter clothing, looking fresh and youthful for holidays from mini facelift. With the holiday season coming soon, now is a perfect time to consider a mini facelift for a youthful look. Mini facelifts are less invasive than full facelifts, offering natural-looking results with shorter recovery times, making them ideal for those with a modest degree of sagging seeking a holiday-ready refresh.

Dr. Diwan, a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained dermatologic surgeon with over three decades of experience, specializes in less invasive techniques for a refined and youthful appearance.

Here’s how to ensure a smooth recovery and maximize your results just in time for the festivities!

Plan for Optimal Recovery Time

A mini facelift generally requires a couple of weeks for initial healing, so plan your procedure at least a month before major holiday events. This  allows time for swelling and bruising to subside, giving your skin the chance to settle into its new, youthful appearance.

Elevate Your Head for Faster Healing

To reduce swelling, keep your head elevated as much as possible during the first few days post-surgery. Sleeping on your back with your head elevated on extra pillows or a wedge pillow can help reduce swelling, reduce any puffiness around the surgical area, and speed up healing.

Stay Hydrated for Glowing Skin

Drinking plenty of water supports your body’s natural healing process, helps you feel better and recover fasrer. Aim for at least eight glasses a day, and consider herbal teas or electrolyte-infused water to help you hydrate.

Use Cold Compresses Sparingly

Cold compresses can reduce swelling and discomfort. Lightly apply a cold pack wrapped in a soft cloth to avoid direct contact with your skin, and limit sessions to 10-15 minutes at a time.

Follow a Gentle Skincare Routine

Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansers and moisturizers post-procedure. Avoid harsh scrubs or retinoids until you have the go-ahead from your doctor. Applying a recommended post-care cream can also soothe the skin and accelerate healing, keeping your complexion smooth and radiant.

Avoid Strenuous Activities

While light walking promotes circulation, refrain from more strenuous exercising or lifting for at least two weeks. Overexertion may increase blood flow to the face, prolonging swelling and bruising.

How to Choose the Right Laser Treatment for Your Skin Tone

A woman smiling at the camera after laser treatment Laser treatments are popular for skin rejuvenation, treatment of blood vessels in the skin, hair removal, and pigmentation correction. However, choosing the right laser treatment for your skin tone is essential to achieve safe and effective results. Darker skin types (like FItzpatrick skin types 4, 5, and 6) which include darker Asian and African American complexions require specialized approaches to avoid complications.

Understanding Skin Types 4, 5, and 6

The Fitzpatrick scale classifies skin tones from type 1 (very fair) to type 6 (highly pigmented). Skin types 4, 5, and 6 are characterized by medium to deep tones, often found in individuals of Asian, Middle Eastern, Hispanic, African, and South Asian descent.

These skin types have more pigment (melanin) which protects against UV rays. However, it can also make them more sensitive to laser treatments that are not specifically designed for darker skin. This is why choosing the right option among different laser types is important.

The Nd YAG Laser

The Nd YAG laser is often the safest choice for darker skin tones because it has a wavelength that has very little absorption by the melanin in the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). By bypassing the melanin in the epidermis, it reduces the risk of hyperpigmentation, making it an ideal option for darker skin types 4, 5, and 6. An Nd YAG laser can be used to treat discoloration, tattoos as well as blood vessels in darker skin types.

Diode Laser

The Diode laser is another laser which is an excellent option for hair removal in medium to dark skin tones. It offers a good balance between safety and effectiveness. It can target the hair follicles without excessively heating the surrounding skin and causing discoloration.

Picosecond Laser

A picosecond laser is a non-ablative laser that uses extremely short pulses that are a trillionth of a second long. A longer wavelngth picosecond laser can be effective for pigment issues, acne scars, and overall skin rejuvenation in Asian skin and other darker skin types. Its super short pulses minimize heat damage, reducing the risk of pigmentation changes.

Tips for Choosing the Right Laser Treatment

Always consult a board certified dermatologist experienced in treating darker skin tones, for a recommendation of the most suitable laser treatment for your skin type and specific concerns, to achieve the best outcome with the least risk.

Request treatment of a test area before undergoing full treatment to see how your skin reacts. This helps identify potential risks and ensures the laser is safe for your skin.

What to Expect Before, During, and After Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is a straight forward, simple surgical procedure for improving the appearance of the eyes by removing excess skin, and fat if needed, from the upper eyelids. This office surgery treats both cosmetic and functional concerns associated with drooping eyelids.

Before the Procedure

The preparation phase for upper eyelid blepharoplasty begins with a comprehensive consultation with Dr Diwan. Dr Diwan is a fellowship trained board-certified dematologic surgeon experienced in upper eyelid blepharoplasty. During this meeting, she will evaluate your medical history, examine your eyes, and discuss your goals and expectations.

In the weeks leading up to surgery, it’s crucial to maintain a healthy lifestyle and follow the pre-surgical instructions to get the best results. It’s also a good time to plan and prepare for some downtime for your recovery, as you’ll need to limit your physical activities for several days after surgery. One week before surgery, you will need to have blood tests to screen for blood clotthing disorders. You will be given prescriptions for any medications needed.

During the Procedure

On the day of surgery you’ll arrive at our office, where the staff will prepare you for the operation. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is normally performed comfortably with local anesthetic. A medication to help you relax can be provided, if preferred. The operation normally takes about one to one and a half hours.

The incisions lines and the excess skin to be removed are marked and mesaured precisely to achieve symmetry. The tissues are gently numbed with local anesthetic injection. The incisions are made along the pre-marked incision lines so that the final scar is hidden in the natural creases of your upper eyelid. The excess skin on the upper eyelid is removed. Any underlying protruding fat is carefully reduced. The incisions are then closed with fine sutures. The same procedure is performed on the opposite side.

After the Procedure

Immediately following surgery, icepacks are placed on the eyes and you’ll be monitored until you are ready to go home. Your eyes may feel tight, and you can expect ro have some swelling and bruising.

You’ll be given specific post-surgical care instructions before being discharged to your ride.

The initial recovery period typically lasts about a week to ten days. During this time, you must apply cold compresses for three days, keep your head elevated and rest.
