When Can I Work Out After BOTOX Injections?

Many of the guests of our practice lead active, healthy lifestyles. As such, they often wonder how cosmetic treatments will impact their exercise routines, and for how long. Although BOTOX® Cosmetic is known for its minimal downtime, it is advisable to postpone certain physical activities for a little while after the injections.

You should wait a bare minimum of 4 hours to engage in strenuous exercise after BOTOX®. Downtime for 24 hours after the injections is ideal. Here are the reasons why:

  • Intense exercise raises your heart rate. Getting your blood pumping during exertion is normally a good thing, but right after your BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, a raised heart rate can potentially diffuse the BOTOX®, causing it to spread out instead of being concentrated in the treatment area. Increased blood flow also tends to worsen swelling and bruising.
  • Excess movement may cause the BOTOX® to migrate. Activities like yoga, running, squats, and jump rope require a lot of moving around. The motion could cause the medication to migrate away from the treatment area, thereby impacting your results. It needs several hours to settle into place.
  • Exercise may cause you to touch or rub your face. Pushing your hair off your forehead, rubbing the sweat from your brow, or unconsciously rubbing your face while you’re working out can also put pressure on the injection site, which will prevent the BOTOX® from settling in the treatment area.

Your consultation with Dr. Renuka Diwan will include a discussion of your regular exercise routine. Once Dr. Diwan knows exactly what activities you like to do, she can provide a customized timeline for downtime. Most people are able to get back to these routines within 4-24 hours.
