Men and women come to The Laser & Skin Surgery Center worried that their crow’s feet creases, forehead furrows, and under eye hollows are making them look older than they really are. What they fail to realize is that their lips can also give away their true age. It’s true—the lips can single-handedly make you look older. Here is how—and what you can do about it!
Fleeting Fullness
It is well known that as we age, our lips lose their natural volume. More than just looking deflated, the lips:
- Look thinner and flatter
- Lack definition
- Appear uneven
Fortunately, injectable lip fillers are able to restore a natural fullness to the lips. For lip augmentation, Dr. Diwan favors hyaluronic acid fillers, like Restylane®, Restylane® Silk, Juvederm Volbella®, and Juvéderm Ultra®, as they are specially formulated to give the lips a smooth finish.
Inevitable Lip Lines
Whether we’re talking, eating, sipping, smiling or simply expressing emotion, our lips are in motion. With every movement, fine, vertical lines are etched a little deeper and can quickly make us look even older than we really are. While lip lines are inevitable, they are treatable. Dr. Diwan performs a number of in-office procedures that can restore the delicate skin around the lips. While gentle treatments, such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels, superficial laser resurfacing and microneedling are able to stimulate collagen within the skin to help improve fine lines, deeper lines can be reversed with hyaluronic acid fillers and laser resurfacing.
Dull Discoloration
While we are careful to apply sun protection elsewhere on our face, the lips, neck, and chest are often left unprotected. Sun spots and hyperpigmentation compromise the appearance of healthy lips. Make sure your lips are protected. Invest in a lipstick, gloss, or balm that contains sunscreen and remember to reapply frequently to make up for sunscreen that has been licked off. Fractional laser resurfacing with the CO2RE Laser that Dr. Diwan performs at her Westlake dermatology practice, targets discoloration by lightening dark spots as well as smoothing the tone and texture of the skin of the lips. Treatment with IPL (Intense pulsed light) also lighten brown discoloration.
