Wrinkle Treatment

This is a safe, non-surgical method for smoothing out facial wrinkles and scars by replentishing the collagen in the skin. The collagen content of the skin decreases with time. Collagen loss is further accelerated by sun-exposure. Loss of collagen from the skin results in wrinkling of the skin. Inflammation associated with acne causes damage to collagen with resulting scars. Thus, replacement of collagen fills out wrinkles and scars and restores the youthful appearance of the skin.

Different types of collagen are available. The most widely used is Zyderm or Zyplast which are bovine (cow) products. A skin test is necessary to exclude an existing allergy (found in 3% of the population). If after six weeks no allergy is detected, collagen may be injected into facial skin with a very fine needle, in the office. Collagen augmentation is usually repeated every 3-6 months to maintain the improvement achieved. For those who are allergic to collagen, alternative filling agents can be considered.
