A popular office procedure, microdermabrasion causes gentle abrasion of the skin surface with crystals. This results in improvement of skin problems such as pigmentation, wrinkles, superficial acne scars, and acne. Areas that can be treated include the face, neck, chest, and the back of the hands.
The procedure is performed without anesthetic or after pre-treatment of the skin with an anesthetic cream, if needed. A series of treatments (six or more) result in gradual improvement in skin texture and appearance. The benefits of microdermabrasion are a result of changes in the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin. The intensity of the treatments is gradually increased, as tolerated, to achieve optimal results. Many patients find that continuing the treatments (6 or more) provides progressive improvement. The benefits obtained can be maintained with periodic touch-up microdermabrasion for ‘freshening’ the skin along with a planned skin care regimen with MD Forte alphahydroxy acids or Obagi NuDerm system, and sun protection measures.
Microdermabrasion is also known by other names such as Parisian Peel. It is performed in skin care salons & medical offices. In our office, microdermabrasion is performed with a medical unit called the "Mega Peel." This unit allows a higher intensity of treatment for areas that need it. Salons utilize “salon units” which cannot achieve the same results. The benefits of microdermabrasion are a result of the combined effect of the crystals as well as the vacuum pressure. Without the vacuum the same results cannot be achieved. This is the reason that home microdermabrasion creams or kits are not of any significant benefit.
